In all of these roles I have been known as “the numbers man” whether it be designing financial reports or balanced scorecards, for which I  was nominated for the Harvard Business School hall of fame. I “pulled together the data” for many a senior manager and executives and have presented numerical data in 20 countries from the USA to UAE, from Canada to China, from Singapore to Spain.

My business content frequently coincided with the very latest Maths GCSE syllabus, for instance graph techniques in general and real life graphs of frequency distribution and billing; statistical averages; simple VAT percentages; pricing, pay rates and compound interest.  I also spent some time at Bradford University developing statistical process control methods for use in industry. I am a recognised expert in techniques such as league tables and data analytics, which I presented to London Business School.

My transformation to a maths tutor began with my children progressing through school.  I am completely familiar with the minutae of syllabae from KS3 to GCSE, I GCSE and Further Mathematics, and my tutoring has achieved some outstanding grade success. With the coming of the new Maths GCSE structure and tougher content I updated all my materials and have imaginative but thorough lesson plans for all 80 Maths GCSE topics, exam management and applied problem solving. I publish materials on the TES website. I became more involved with Waldegrave School, helping students prepare for Oxbridge interviews and completing a four year stint as a School Governor. I have diversified the business by extending the tutoring from Maths to Science and Business/Economics, and into new areas like T-Level, EPQ Extended Project and Numerical Reasoning tests. My reach now extends to clients from USA and Asia as well as the U.K. and Europe.

My lifelong hobbies are sport (golf player, Sunderland supporter), music and the media and you will see I bring these topics into the Maths questions I compose, the blogs I write and the many papers I have written and published. I run the tutoring business with support from my wife Alison who looks after the administration and generally is available on the day to attend to any student needs. We are both Basic Disclosure (CRB) checked.

Taking a career break for our two children, she was for many years a Trustee of a National Charity, the Miscarriage Association, and together with Rick developed a graphical “moving averages” performance management framework for the charity and cascaded this down into a practical fundraising strategy. Alison is a keen pianist and has encouraged our children (who were both at Waldegrave School, Twickenham) with their musical instruments (piano, guitar and cello). Alison now does regular teaching for LEAH (Learning English at Home) where she teaches adults including immigrants who are struggling with English and need the basic phrases to get by such as visiting the supermarket or doctor. As part of this Alison has undertaken and passed safeguarding courses. Alison also sings in two choirs, one the local one at Hampton and second the world wide Brandenburg Camino on-line choir. In the past she has sung in New York at Carnegie Hall.  She is adding to her French and German languages by learning Ukranian.

Alison and I regularly go on walking holidays whether in the hills on the Penine Way or Ridgeway, or the vineyards of France, and always with our Labradoodle Cindy.
